Instagram Grid Update: What You Need to Know About the New Layout

Christine Merser

Have you noticed over the past few days or weeks that your Instagram profile grid—or the grid of an account you follow—looks a little different? If so, you're not imagining things. Instagram has recently updated its profile grid layout, transitioning from the traditional square format to a taller, rectangular ratio.

Moving forward you will want to create your content for Instagram using the new dimensions. Is it a coincidence that this change rolled out the same week TikTok briefly left (and then, well, returned)? We think not. This new grid format is designed to better showcase the predominantly vertical content users share today, such as Stories, Reels, and TikToks. And honestly, we’re here for it—after years of struggling with mismatched aspect ratios where your Reels didn’t fit your feed and vice versa, this update is a welcome change. A lot less hair will be torn out now.

While the grid preview now displays images in a 3:4 ratio (1015 x 1350 pixels), direct uploads are still restricted to a maximum size of 1080 x 1350 pixels (a 4:5 aspect ratio). To ensure your content displays perfectly across the platform, we recommend designing your images and videos in the 4:5 format. If you use Canva, the platform has added this new Instagram feed template, so when you go to create a new design, simply search "Instagram Post (4:5)" and you will see the new format.

Haven’t noticed this update on your profile yet? That’s because Instagram hasn’t rolled it out to all users just yet. In the meantime, centering key elements within a square (1:1) area is a safe way to maintain a consistent look for all viewers.
